The wait is over—OpenAI’s highly anticipated feature has officially launched, aiming to redefine how we interact with the web. Dubbed ChatGPT Search, this new tool goes beyond traditional search engines by incorporating a conversational interface into the search process. Available now for ChatGPT Plus and Team users, ChatGPT Search combines AI’s natural language processing with the latest information across various domains, from news and sports scores to stock market updates and weather.

OpenAI describes ChatGPT Search as a blend of real-time search capabilities with the ease and intuitiveness of a conversational AI. This latest feature allows ChatGPT to either automatically fetch relevant web data when prompted or respond to users manually clicking the new “Search” option after inputting a question. The result is an integrated, streamlined experience—users ask, ChatGPT answers, and up-to-the-minute sources are seamlessly woven into the conversation.

Collaboration and Transparency with Source Integration

One of the standout aspects of ChatGPT Search is its transparency. Responses are now supplemented with linked sources, such as news articles and blog posts, which can be accessed by clicking the “Sources” button. This feature brings ChatGPT closer to a standard that search users expect, marking a significant step in user trust and data verification.

According to OpenAI, extensive feedback from the news industry and global publisher partners was key to developing this feature, and lessons learned from a prototype, SearchGPT, have informed ChatGPT Search’s final iteration. “We’re working to make the search experience more robust, especially in categories like shopping and travel,” the company announced, hinting at potential upgrades on the horizon.

Access Expanding to More Users Soon

Currently, ChatGPT Search is available at chatgpt.com and through ChatGPT’s mobile and desktop apps, accessible to ChatGPT Plus and Team users, as well as those on the SearchGPT waitlist. OpenAI plans to make the feature accessible to Enterprise and Edu users in the coming weeks, with free-tier users set to receive access over the coming months.

With ChatGPT Search, OpenAI is positioning itself to take on Google’s search monopoly by integrating conversational capabilities into search.
