Indian cricket icon Ravichandran Ashwin has joined Ravindra Jadeja in an elite club by becoming only the second cricketer to score 1000 runs and take 100 wickets in the World Test Championship (WTC). This achievement took place on Thursday, September 19, during the first Test against Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Ashwin, 38, reached this milestone after batting at No. 8 and surpassing 52 runs in India’s first innings.

In addition to his batting accomplishments, Ashwin already boasts an impressive 174 wickets in the WTC.

Previously, Ravindra Jadeja became the first player in WTC history to record 1000 runs and 100 wickets, having reached the milestone during India’s Test series against England in Ranchi earlier this year.

While 11 bowlers have managed to take over 100 wickets in WTC history, Ashwin and Jadeja are the only ones to have also scored 1000 runs.

Chasing New Records
As the Test series against Bangladesh progresses, Ashwin stands on the brink of surpassing more records. He is only 14 wickets away from overtaking Australian spinner Nathan Lyon’s record of 187 wickets, which would make Ashwin the leading wicket-taker in WTC history.

Additionally, if Ashwin secures a five-wicket haul during the series, it will mark his 11th such performance, setting a new record for the most five-wicket innings in WTC history.

With 516 Test wickets in his career so far, Ashwin is close to surpassing West Indian great Courtney Walsh, who finished with 519 wickets. Moreover, taking 15 wickets in this series will elevate him past Lyon’s 530 wickets, making Ashwin the seventh-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket .

Ashwin also has a chance to become the leading wicket-taker in the ongoing 2023-2025 WTC cycle, needing just 10 wickets to surpass Australia’s Josh Hazlewood, who has 51 wickets. A further nine wickets would break Zaheer Khan’s record of 31 wickets in India-Bangladesh Tests, making Ashwin the top wicket-taker in matches between these two nations.
